Jury Weighs Penalty in CIA Murders
A jury in Fairfax began deliberating whether to recommend death or life in prison for a Pakistani man convicted of gunning down two CIA workers. Mir Aimal Kasi, 33, could get the death penalty after being convicted of capital murder in the death of CIA communications analyst Frank Darling. Kasi also was convicted of first-degree murder in the slaying of CIA physician Lansing Bennett during his deadly stroll through traffic with an AK-47 assault rifle outside the CIA’s headquarters in 1993. In closing arguments, prosecutor Robert F. Horan said Kasi shot in anger over U.S. treatment of Muslims, is proud of the crime and deserves to die for it. Defense lawyer Judith Barger said Kasi should get life in prison because he was brain-damaged as a baby.
