A Description That’s Beyond Compare

Share

I have a problem with your opening statement regarding Giselle Fernandez, host of “Cafe Ole.” You describe Fernandez as “half-Mexican, half-Jewish” (“A Spanish Language TV Network Tries Bilingualism,” Nov. 8). These two characteristics have nothing in common. She could be half-Mexican and half-Israeli or half-Jewish and half-Catholic, but when describing her as you have, one might just as well be half-Mexican and half-green, or half-slender and half-Jewish.

Mexican is a nationality and Jewish describes followers of certain religious beliefs. While both may coexist in an individual, when used in this manner, the other parts of Fernandez’s characteristics remain undescribed.
