Thailand’s constitutional monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, accepted the Cabinet appointments of new Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai. The government is to be sworn in today and will begin efforts to rescue the country’s deeply troubled economy. After the resignation of Premier Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, Chuan forged an eight-party coalition to return to the post he had held from 1992 to 1995. Banker Supachai Panitchpakdi will be one of four deputy prime ministers, while banker Tarrin Nimmanahaeminda will be finance minister.
