Alleged Drug Lord in Mexico Is Arrested
Army troops have arrested an alleged member of the Amezcua Brothers cartel, a gang reputedly involved in trafficking methamphetamine to the United States, authorities announced Sunday.
Adan Amezcua Contreras was arrested at an army roadblock in the southwestern state of Colima on Saturday when soldiers found a .38-caliber pistol in his possession. Mexican law prohibits civilians from carrying most weapons larger than .22 caliber.
Under questioning, he acknowledged forming part of the cartel, the attorney general’s office said.
The roadblocks are part of routine operations the army carries out on Mexican highways to look for illicit explosives and firearms.
A Mexico City judge placed Amezcua under house arrest on charges relating to narcotics, weapons possession and financial operations with illegally obtained money.
Amezcua and his two brothers, Jesus and Luis, allegedly run a methamphetamine production and trafficking ring based in the western city of Guadalajara.
