City Encourages Composting Leaves
The Thousand Oaks Public Works Department is urging residents to recycle fallen leaves into nutrient-rich compost for use in their gardens.
Composting is an environmentally sound alternative to bagging and disposing of leaves in the trash, said Kate Scoville, the city’s environmental programs assistant.
Scoville suggests running over the leaves with a lawn mower or allowing them to dry in an open plastic bag.
Dry leaves are high in carbon, and when mixed with fresh clippings or food scraps, create a quick recipe for compost.
During the wet months, the top should be left off a compost bin because damp leaves decompose quicker.
The city is selling a variety of bins at reduced prices.
