Students at School for Disabled Get Equipment From Community Group

Students at the Imperial Avenue School for the disabled saw their wish list answered Tuesday when a community organization donated 15 wheelchairs and several other pieces of special equipment that is necessary for them to sit or stand up.

Leadership El Segundo, a program sponsored by the El Segundo Chamber of Commerce for future community leaders, raised $10,000 from local businesses and residents to buy the equipment. The equipment will benefit the more than 70 special needs students, who range from infants to 18-year-olds. The Imperial Avenue School is operated by the Los Angeles County office of education for disabled students who live between Inglewood and the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

“This is helping children who require support to do things we take for granted like turning our heads or moving forward or backward,” Principal Gayle Caldwell said. “It will enable the children to be in a new environment.”
