The man described as the “main player” in a series of rapes and robberies of Valley-area masseuses was sentenced to life in state prison Tuesday.

Christopher Terrell Dickson must serve at least 87 years behind bars before he is eligible for parole under the 103-year sentence handed down by Van Nuys Superior Court Judge Sandy R. Kriegler, officials said.

Dickson, 30, was convicted in July of rape, robbery, sexual battery and burglary. His partner, Thomas Nelson, 21, is currently serving 40 years to life in prison.

“I think the sentence was entirely appropriate,” said Deputy Dist. Atty. Alan Yochelson of the Sex Crimes, Child Abuse, Domestic Violence Unit.

“This was a crime spree involving victims who were particularly vulnerable because their businesses were unlicensed and the defendants apparently felt they could prey on them at will.”

LAPD Det. Gregory Stone, who arrested the pair, said Dickson was the “main player” in the series of robberies and rapes against masseuses in the San Fernando Valley between July and August 1996.

The defendant would respond to the adds posing as customers.

The assailants usually stole cash or jewelry but raped two of their victims before their arrest Sept. 4, 1996, the detective testified.

Following the sentencing hearing, Dickson’s lawyer said the punishment did not fit the crime while Dickson’s friends and family complained he did not receive a fair trial.

“Aside from the poor representation, the witnesses didn’t make a positive identification,” said family friend Rosalind Taylor. “I don’t know how the jurors could come to that kind of decision,” she said.
