District Accused of Censorship
The father of a former Costa Mesa High School student has filed a claim against the Newport-Mesa Unified School District, alleging the district violated his daughter’s 1st Amendment rights.
Michael Miller alleged officials at the high school censored articles his daughter, Carrie, wanted to publish as editor of the school newspaper last year. The articles were submitted by various students, and all were on the subject of sex.
Principal Andy Hernandez has denied the allegations. He said the articles were submitted late in the year and there was no time to publish them.
The claim prompted Newport-Mesa’s board to review its policies on student publications. The district has not yet acted on the claim, which is required by state law before a governmental agency can be sued.
