City Hires Consultant to Study Sales Tax Take

The city will pay a marketing consultant $40,000 to suggest ways to lure new businesses, improve those here and boost sales tax revenue.
Reports the city’s sales tax revenue is lagging prompted the council to vote 4 to 1 Tuesday to hire the consultant to prepare an economic development study.
Mayor David M. Swerdlin opposed the decision because he believes the city’s economy is improving.
“It’s my feeling we are not spending money wisely in this case,” he said.
City Manager George Scarborough said the community is at a disadvantage because nearby cities such as Mission Viejo or Laguna Niguel attract consumers to shopping malls and theater complexes.
“We depend on $3-million-plus in sales tax revenues,” he said. “We cannot afford those numbers slipping.”
