8 Villagers Killed by Artillery Shells
Artillery shells struck the Shiite Muslim village of Beit Lif near the Israeli border, killing at least eight Lebanese and wounding 12 others. Israeli Maj. Gen. Amiram Levine said Amal and Hezbollah guerrillas “fired intentionally . . . into Beit Lif.” Both groups denied firing into the village, and Amal officials accused Israel of launching the barrage and then covering it up by accusing the guerrillas. That charge was refuted by U.N. peacekeepers, who said the shells came from guerrilla-held positions, an account corroborated by Lebanese officials, who said Beit Lif was hit by mistake.
