Firm Seeks to Replace 5 Lifeguard Towers, Paint 3-D Murals
After painting a 3-D mural on a new Marina del Rey lifeguard tower last summer, Beach Art, a small private company, is hoping to replace and paint five towers on Venice Beach.
The company used the volunteer labor of a dozen children and staff volunteers to paint the Mothers Beach tower in the Marina, Venice High School art teacher Sharon Gebhart said. Community muralist Rip Cronk supervised the work and sketched out the design, which portrays children’s alphabet blocks in various combinations, Gebhart said.
A new tower was required for the 3-D mural because the existing tower would have required extensive repairs, said Sally Sarlot, Beach Art president.
Beach Art has since gotten local artists to design murals for five towers on Venice beach, and is looking for sponsors to underwrite the $20,000 cost of building each new tower, Sarlot said.
The project is being carried out with the cooperation of county government.
