Gifts Are Sought for Native American Kids

The Walking Shield American Indian Society hopes to fill the Christmas wish lists of 35,000 Native American children living on reservations in 15 states this year, officials say.

“Our hardest group to get things for are our older kids,” said Hugh Margesson, executive director of the Orange-based group.

“One of the main things we focus on are school supplies, which are in very short supply on the reservations.”

The nonprofit group, founded 10 years ago, works all year to provide the basic necessities of life to Native Americans around the country, Margesson said.

The group’s directors focus on educational needs but also find food, housing, emergency cash, furniture and scholarships for reservation residents.

During the holidays, they want to make sure children of the reservations, including the teenagers, receive a gift.

New, unwrapped gifts may be dropped off at the organization’s office at 628 N. Eckhoff St.
