Board of Trustees Has No Focus

Share

* In The Times I find a story indicating that the new president of the proposed Cal State University, Channel Islands campus has decided that high-tech and international trade should be the focus of the proposed new campus. This is just another area of confusion for the people of Ventura County.

On Nov. 2, The Times published a report that the programs under consideration for the new university included: a complete agriculture program, a master’s program in bilingual/bicultural social work, an environmental sciences program, a nursing program with a possible concentration in elder care and an “innovative teacher training program.” Further, possible connections to the Navy, Hollywood, GTE and Amgen were written of in glowing terms.

Now there is a new focus. What focus? The Board of Trustees hasn’t made up its mind what will be done at the proposed new campus.

And that is one more reason the trustees of the Ventura County Community College District should not have offered to commit up to $20 million of the funding for the three campuses of the county community colleges to an idea that clearly needs more “critical thinking.”
