June Clark Atkinson; Former Girl Scout Leader

June Clark Atkinson, a Ventura resident who loved to sail, died Sept. 15 in a local hospital. She was 81.

Atkinson was born June 3, 1916, in Willoughby, Ohio, and moved with her family to California in the early 1920s. She graduated from Beverly Hills High School, then attended Scripps College and earned a master’s degree in archeology from Stanford University.

She volunteered as a Girl Scout leader in the 1950s, frequently went sailing with her husband, John Morgan Atkinson, and more recently was an active member of the Pacific Southwestern Region Embroiderers Guild of America.

Atkinson is survived by a son, Clark Wilson Atkinson of Culver City; a daughter, Anne Atkinson Leuteneker of Maui, Hawaii; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A private service was held at her family’s plot in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles County, where her husband, parents and grandparents are buried. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Assn., 3460 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 900, Los Angeles, CA 90010-2229.

Arrangements were under the direction of Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura.
