An Arcadia man was sentenced Wednesday to 22 years in prison for a hate crime in which he brandished a gun at an African American man while subjecting him to racial epithets and death threats.

Arthur Fairwell, 44, was convicted last week of felony assault with a firearm, making a terrorist threat, committing a hate crime and possession of a firearm by a felon, authorities said.

Pasadena Superior Court Judge Michelle Rosenblatt sentenced Fairwell to the maximum sentence, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Carla Arranaga of the Los Angeles County district attorney’s hate crimes division.

In March, Fairwell pulled a loaded gun on Kevin Reed, who was leaving the Catamaran Bar in Arcadia, Arranaga said.

The prosecutor said Reed spewed racial epithets at Reed. “The defendant did not know the victim,” Arranaga said. “He was a complete stranger.”
