The GAIN Program and Citizenship Center at Valley College on Saturday will sponsor “U.S. Citizenship Day,” an outreach program to help legal immigrants become naturalized citizens.

With the threat of the loss of public assistance benefits under welfare reform, increasing numbers of legal immigrants are applying for citizenship.

Immigration counselors will be available at the college from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday to guide legal immigrants through the citizenship application process, said Lynne Brower, GAIN Program and Citizenship Center director and event organizer.

To apply for citizenship, applicants must present their Social Security card, green card, current identification and information on spouses, former spouses, children, work history and former addresses, Brower said.

Applicants can also have their fingerprints and photographs taken for free, Brower said.

Counselors will then assist applicants in filling out citizenship application forms. The cost to file the application with the Immigration and Naturalization Service is $95.

The college is at 5800 Fulton Ave.
