Pornographer Leaves Prison After Serving 3 Years for Killing Brother
Jim Mitchell, who made national headlines first by fighting for the right to make and sell pornography and later for killing his brother, Artie, was released from prison Thursday.
Mitchell was released from San Quentin after serving three years of a six-year voluntary manslaughter sentence in the fatal shooting of his younger brother in February 1991.
Jim and Artie Mitchell made headlines in the late 1960s and 1970s during court battles over whether they had the constitutional right to make and sell pornography.
During Jim Mitchell’s trial, testimony revealed that Artie Mitchell became addicted to cocaine and alcohol. As a result, he became paranoid and started leaving death threats on answering machines, including his brother’s.
After a confrontation, Jim Mitchell barged into his brother’s house and shot him.
