Redevelopment Project Targets Heritage Springs

It was a neighborhood of shops and homes until the discovery of oil 80 years ago. Now, Santa Fe Springs officials want to turn back the clock and revive the Heritage Springs area.

Plans for the $4-million renewal project include restaurants, an office complex, a sculpture garden, trees and a pedestrian bridge across Norwalk Boulevard and Telegraph Road.

“This is the kickoff phase of a several-hundred-acre development that will take place over the next 10 years,” said Jim Turba, assistant director of planning and development.

As the geographic center of the city, Heritage Springs was subdivided into residential and commercial lots when Santa Fe Springs was a health resort. But with the discovery of oil after the turn of the century, development ceased.

Oil is still being pumped, but the field has been reduced considerably. The Heritage Springs project will open the center of the city to development, said Turba.
