HEROIC EFFORT
Two letters last Sunday mentioned the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration. It was the greatest humanitarian venture in military history. As of June 1947, when it ended its mission, UNRRA was caring for 648,056 displaced persons in Germany and 90,110 in Austria.
Yes, UNRRA maintained the camps, but the military had the responsibility for provision of food, clothing and medicine. My unit (384th MP Battalion, Railway Security) was responsible for 52 DP camps in the U.S. Zone of Austria.
