Guns and Laws

* Gee, last time I looked in your paper, an AR-15 was an “assault weapon,” but in Valley Focus on Sept. 26, the rifles received by the San Fernando Police Department are merely “semiautomatic rifles.” It’s amazing how the biased media’s play on words can change things. First it was “assault weapons,” the choice of bad guys, then it’s “Saturday night specials.” Next on the anti-gunners list will be hunting rifles parlayed as “sniper rifles,” and after that, sporting shotguns will be viewed as “sawed-off death weapons.”

* OK, so the Los Angeles City Council passed Mike Feuer’s futile and ineffective ordinances on guns. (“City Council Backs New Gun Laws,” Oct. 1). I hope The Times will track the appropriate statistics and report to us at annual intervals with information that will allow us to discover whether these “curbs” had any effect on violent crime. May I be so bold as to make a prediction? Feuer’s silly laws will have no effect on crime.
