After deciding to set up a nonprofit agency that would help the city’s charitable organizations, officials last week distributed $51,000 in grants to several groups.
City Council members awarded $34,000 to the Boys and Girls Club of La Habra/Brea to be used on two programs that aim to keep local youths off the streets. Another $9,000 went to the La Habra Depot Theatre.
The Friends of the Library got $3,000 to continue its children’s reading program, and the La Habra Art Gallery received $500. In addition, La Habra and Sonora high schools were given $2,750 and $1,750, respectively, for their annual graduation night parties.
In separate action, the council approved the formation of the nonprofit agency, which will cost between $5,000 and $7,000. Once in operation, the city will step aside and allow local charities to run it.
