City to Serve Pizza to Its Teen Advisors

Students serving on the city’s new Advisory Committee of Teens will get pizza and soda at meetings, despite objections from one councilman who sought to cap spending on meals.

In a 3-1 vote with Mayor Peter Buffa absent, the City Council on Monday agreed to spend $1,200 on food for the teen panel meetings.

City Councilwoman Libby Cowan, who oversees the committee, said a youthful perspective on city issues is worth the expense. Also, the young commissioners are busy with homework, sports and other activities.

“We’ve found that to meet right at the heart of the dinner hour--6 o’clock--is the most convenient,” she said.

The City Council and other commissions, including those dealing with planning and parks and recreation, already spend about $8,800 a year on food, said Councilman Gary Monahan, who opposed the measure. He said he did not want the food fund to grow to $10,000.

“We’re spending an awful lot of money on meals,” Monahan said.
