Quick Spin Through Automotive History

Profiles of major car designers and entrepreneurs, a full-size replica of the world’s first gasoline-powered car and a monumental mural of automotive history are featured at the new $10-million Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn, Mich.

The Hall of Fame, originally in Midland, was expanded and moved to its new building near the Ford Museum & Greenfield Village in August. Funded by car firms, the State of Michigan, and private foundations and individuals, it focuses on major figures in the worldwide automotive industry, using art, interactive displays and videos.

Visitors are “guided” by the figure of Andy, a fictional 10-year-old, past a 12-by-65-foot industry mural by John Gable, 53, an artist and former car designer who attended the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles; a replica of the Benz Patent Motorwagen, a three-wheeler built by Carl Benz in 1885; profiles of major industry figures; displays of classic cars; and other features.
