Rotary Clubs Donate X-Ray Machine to Mexico

In the wake of Hurricane Pauline, two South Bay Rotary clubs have banded together to send an X-ray machine to storm-ravaged Mexico.

The Gardena Rotary Club and the Palos Verdes Sunset Rotary Club sent the medical equipment to a sister club in Puerto Vallarta.

Carnival Cruise Lines offered to ship the X-ray and Jeff Earle, president of the Palos Verdes club, arranged to travel to Mexico to assist in the delivery of the machine, which will be used by the Red Cross when it arrives later this week.

The Rotary Club obtained the outdated X-ray machine from a convalescent hospital a year ago and spent $2,500 to restore it. Roy Murdock, the Gardena Rotary Club member who picked up the machine and has worked to send it to Mexico, said the organization tries to pick up equipment that is considered obsolete in the United States and donate it to countries that need it.

“We had planned to send it to Puerto Vallarta anyway, but it will come in handy now,” said Murdock. “It was good timing for the delivery.”
