Work Starts at Site of Science Center

Demolition has begun on a former furniture store at the future site of the Discovery Science Center, and construction is expected to begin next month, officials said last week.

Crews began tearing down the former Barker Bros. store on North Main Street last week. The work should be finished near the end of this month, Science Center Executive Director Karen Johnson said.

Construction for phase one of the Science Center, which will include a 117-foot-high cube, is expected to cost $19.8 million.

Johnson said the center has about 75% of the money for phase one pledged or in hand. The center is hoping to receive another $1 million in federal funds in the coming weeks under a federal science funding bill.

Plans call for an interactive museum with a focus on science.
