The Rev. Edward Carmel Carroll, a priest at All Saints Episcopal Church in Oxnard, died Saturday. He was 75.

Carroll was born Oct. 8, 1922, in Kentucky. He earned a PhD in library science from UC Berkeley, then moved to Columbia, Mo., where he taught at the University of Missouri. In 1960, he married Greta Sjositrom.

Sixteen years ago, Carroll, who worked his way through college as a janitor at an Episcopal church in Santa Monica, was ordained as a priest. Two years ago, after the death of his wife, Carroll moved to Oxnard and served at All Saints, according to the Rev. Anthony Guillen, a priest at the church.

“Considering Father Ed was 75 years old, he was a man who never stopped learning,” Guillen said. “Whenever you had a talk about something, he’d come up to you a few days later and he’d hand you a book. He loved learning.”

Carroll also loved to entertain. Guests could count on a home-cooked meal served by candlelight in Carroll’s Oxnard home, Guillen said.

“When he bought his house on A Street, Father Ed had a block party for the neighbors to meet him,” Guillen said. “He was a very kind man.”

There are no survivors.

A wake will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church at 6 p.m. Friday. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Arrangements are under the direction of James A. Reardon Funeral Home, Oxnard.
