Housing Project Will Get a Computer Center

A new computer center will be dedicated today at a Los Angeles public housing project near Chinatown--a center housing authority officials say will help divert youths “away from activities they shouldn’t be involved in.”

The 2:30 p.m. festivities at the William Mead Homes will showcase the housing authority’s Computer Learning Center, similar to others that have been set up in six other housing projects in the city.

“Our purpose is to provide alternatives for our youth and to divert their attention away from activities such as drugs and gangs,” said Diego Cardoso, chairman of the Housing Authority. “We have been seeing a lot of residents at other computer centers participating, and residents at William Mead are enthusiastic about their future.”

The center at the William Mead Homes, which has 1,400 residents, will include seven online computers.
