Johnson & Johnson Pulling Contact Lens Ads

Johnson & Johnson is pulling print and broadcast ads for special contact lenses made by its Vistakon unit because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration accused it of improperly promoting them. The FDA said J&J; falsely implied that Vistakon’s Acuvue UV-absorbing lenses offered as much protection outside as a person would have indoors. The agency also took issue with J&J;’s claim that the lenses protected wearers from radiation from fluorescent lighting, saying that there is no proof that the lights pose such a danger. J&J; said that even though it pulled the ads, some print ads would appear in November issues of magazines that are reaching newsstands now. The company said new ads would be in compliance with FDA requirements.
