Program to Plant Gardens on Vacant Lots Planned

Long Beach is launching a program to plant community gardens on vacant lots.

“Too many vacant lots are projecting an image of blight and abandonment,” said Long Beach Vice Mayor Doris Topsy-Elvord. “Something has to be done in order to reduce the unsightly appearance of these lots.”

A community garden kickoff will be held Saturday on a city-owned vacant lot at Hill Street and Atlantic Avenue.

During the daylong event, residents and elementary schoolchildren will be able to participate in the design of their garden and select trees, plants, flowers and benches.
