18. LAKE PIRU--Largemouth bass bite slow to fair. Crappie fairly active, primarily in marina area. Trout have yet to perk up, and probably will remain sluggish until the water cools.

19. PYRAMID LAKE--Striped bass remain active in several areas, boiling on surface after shad. Top-water lures getting fish from 3-6 pounds, with an occasional larger striper in the mix. Largemouth and smallmouth bass biting sporadically on plastic worms and spinners.

20. LAKE CACHUMA--Largemouth bass and red ear perch biting sporadically on night crawlers at island. Catfish bite slow to fair, best on mackerel at back of bays. Trout planted for the first time last week, but the fish remain sluggish.

21. LAKE CASITAS--Largemouth bass getting more active. Steve Rametta, Covina, 11-pound bass, on buzz bait. Several fish from 2-5 pounds, with plastic worms getting the smaller fish and trout- or shad-like lures getting the bigger fish. Catfish still active. Lots of big stringers being filled with catfish caught on mackerel. New hours: 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

22. CORONA LAKE--Catfish bite fair in late afternoons. Lots of small fish. About 500 pounds of largemouth bass were recently stocked.

23. SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Catfish, catfish and more catfish. No monsters, but lots in the 10-pound class. A night crawler produced the biggest at 15-1, but mackerel remains the best bait.

24. IRVINE LAKE--Catfish from 3-15 pounds are the main fare, and the bite is good enough that most are leaving with stringers weighing in double digits. Bass fishermen using plastic worms and spinnerbaits are faring just as well, catching and releasing bass to 7 pounds. Crappie bite fair.

25. LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish bite steady in afternoons and evenings, with mackerel fished at the flats the best bet. Largemouth bass action slow, but those using buzz baits in early mornings are doing fair. Lake manager Rick Mendoza landed a 7-pounder on a black and purple buzz bait at dawn.

26. LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass biting on shad-like lures and other surface plugs, as well as on anchovies in deeper water. Largemouth bass bite fair on Kastmasters, small spinners and night crawlers. Catfish bite remains fair on anchovies. The deeper the water the better the bite. First trout plant of season scheduled for Oct. 23.

27. LAKE PERRIS--Wayne Thomas, Chino Hills, 9-4 bass, on crankbait at ramp. Lots of smaller bass. Best bite is at east end at 25 feet. Best bait, plastic worms in purple and green. Bluegill bite good, primarily at Bernasconi Beach on meal worms.

29. LAKE CUYAMACA--Inflated night crawlers, Trout Teasers, Roostertails, Panther Martins . . . all are catching trout. The bite is on and there is even some size to some of the fish. Several 2-pounders caught in past week, and two even topped 4 pounds.

30. BIG BEAR LAKE--Trout scattered throughout. Few limits, but few fishermen. Trollers using Rapalas and a variety of shiny lures getting most strikes.

31. BISHOP--Upper-basin lakes and Bishop Creek still producing limits of mostly pan-sized rainbows, with an occasional 3- or 4-pounder in the mix.

32. MAMMOTH LAKES--Convict Lake produced several fish from 2-5 pounds this week, with Power Bait and Rapalas accounting for most. Crowley Lake bite fair to good. Twin Lakes bite good. Rock Creek Lake and Rock Creek perhaps the best bet for limits of mostly small rainbows.

33. JUNE LAKE--Trout active in all lakes on loop, and recent plants of Alpers trout have spiced things up. Rapalas, Kastmasters and Power Bait best in lakes, salmon eggs, worms and small spinners best in Rush Creek. Lots of near-limits.

34. BRIDGEPORT--Brown trout from 3-7 pounds still being caught with surprising regularity off dam at Bridgeport Lake. Float-tubers and bank fishermen doing well with woolly bugger and spruce matuka flies, Rapalas, night crawlers and Power Bait. East Walker river is fluctuating, and reports are varied. Bite is basically fair for sizable browns on dry flies, nymphs and streamers. Kirmin Lake brook trout good, with scud flies getting most.
