The conditions of two girls who lost their 9-year-old sister in a traffic accident on California 33 improved Saturday.

Six-year-old Naomi Lopez had been upgraded from serious to stable condition at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura and 7-year-old Ruth was still in the pediatric intensive care unit at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, but had been upgraded to fair condition.

The girls’ father, Isaias, 46, was still in serious but stable condition at Ventura County Medical Center.

Isaias Lopez was driving the family’s Ford van south on California 33 about 7:30 p.m. Thursday when, for still unexplained reasons, the van swerved and then overturned several times just south of Stanley Avenue, according to a California Highway Patrol spokesman.

Nine-year-old Crystal was thrown from the van and died at the scene. The girls’ mother, Estella, 42, was the only one who escaped serious injury, officials said.

The CHP was still investigating the cause of the accident.
