Breads and cereals are made from the seeds of plants such as wheat, rice and corn. The vegetable oils we use to cook come from seeds such as peanuts, soybeans and sunflowers. Coffee and cocoa also come from seeds. But there are many other uses for this specialized plant part, and some of them have nothing to do with food. Seed oils are found in detergents, soaps, even paints and varnishes, for instance. And a part of the corn seed is used to make adhesives and explosives.
