About 1,000 anti-nuclear activists marched through the center of Ahaus in western Germany on Sunday during a weekend of protests against a nearby atomic waste storage depot.

Police said they arrested about 200 demonstrators Saturday when activists held a sit-down protest on the rail line leading into the depot and some sabotaged the track by burrowing underneath the rails.

Saboteurs left 44 railroad ties dangling, ripped out cables that ran through the tracks and tore down a signal box causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage, police said.

All those detained were released later Saturday but police said some could face criminal charges.
