Japanese Arts Will Be Part of Garden Show

Highlighting the Japanese arts of origami, ikebana and bonsai, the city of Los Angeles will present “Autumn in the Garden” on Sunday at the Japanese Garden.

Part of the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant, the Japanese Garden uses waste water from the San Fernando Valley to demonstrate a positive use of recycled water.

“It’s considered an oasis,” said garden coordinator Betty Ethridge.

“People don’t know it’s here, but it’s right in the middle of the San Fernando Valley. We have 6 1/2 acres of authentic Japanese garden.”

Guests will have the opportunity to view many aspects of Japanese gardening and culture during the event, organizers said, including bonsai, the ancient art of dwarfing and shaping plants and trees to obtain miniaturized versions of mature species.

Other Japanese arts on display will include origami, or paper folding, and ikebana, flower arranging.

To accommodate crowds, “Autumn in the Garden” will take place during two sessions.

The first will run from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., the second from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Admission is $3.

The Japanese Garden is at 6100 Woodley Ave. in Van Nuys, adjacent to Woodley Park.
