Firefighters Warn of Faulty Smoke Alarms
One of the most commonly cited problems when fire inspectors check homes is weak or missing smoke detector batteries.
In the hope of correcting that problem, Costa Mesa Fire Department officials are suggesting that residents change the batteries in their detectors when they turn back their clocks one hour Sunday to end daylight saving time.
A working smoke detector cuts in half the risk of dying in a home fire, according to the department.
The firefighters suggest using new alkaline batteries. After inserting the batteries, make sure to push the test button. Detectors more than 10 years old should be replaced.
