City Offers Reward in Driver’s Slaying

The Los Angeles City Council Tuesday approved a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who killed a 32-year-old Burbank man who drove his Jeep off Mulholland Drive early Saturday morning after being shot in an apparent robbery attempt.

Dario Torres, a former Army corporal who worked for an armored car company, was studying for a career in broadcasting, his family said.

He was sitting with an unidentified female companion in a Jeep Cherokee at about 4 a.m. Saturday when two gunmen approached the pair.

As Torres attempted to drive away, one of the men fired at the couple, striking Torres at least twice in the upper body. Mortally wounded, Torres lost control of the vehicle and plunged 170 feet off a cliff.

Torres’ passenger was injured in the accident but managed to summon help with a car phone.

Torres’ wife, Judy, said she believes the gunmen may have been after the Jeep, which the family recently purchased.

Calling it “an especially disturbing crime,” Councilman Mike Feuer, who represents the area, introduced the motion calling for the reward Tuesday. The motion was unanimously approved by the council but must be signed by Mayor Richard Riordan before taking effect.

Anyone with information about the case is urged to call the Los Angeles Police Department’s North Hollywood Division at (818) 623-4016.
