Statue Honoring Mexican Revolutionary Vandalized

A bronze statue of Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata in Lincoln Park has been vandalized, leaving the figure marred by paint.

Vandals sprayed words such as “Chele” and “Yeto” across Zapata’s wide-brimmed hat and his horse, Department of Recreation and Parks officials said. The 26-foot monument, which was erected in April 1980, pays tribute to the peasant leader of the Mexican revolution. A spokesman for the Mexican Consulate said the vandalism was upsetting.

“Zapata has a special place in the pantheon of Mexican history,” said Miguel Escobar, press attache at the Mexican Consulate. “It’s an unfortunate incident, and I hope the authorities do an investigation to get to the bottom of this.”

A Recreation and Parks maintenance crew is scheduled to clean the graffiti today, a spokesman said.
