Harbor Area Odor
I sleep better at night knowing the LAPD is evaluating the noxious odors in the harbor area. As reported Oct. 18, officers were unable to identify the odor or its source, but said it was “harmless.”
Those of us who live in the harbor area are all too familiar with these odors. They are neither natural nor harmless: They emanate from the refineries and other chemical businesses that dominate the area, and do not appear “naturally” nor mysteriously. They appear whenever we have Santa Ana winds that blow their odors toward the ocean, instead of the prevailing onshore breeze. As to their harmlessness, the AQMD has recently decided to investigate them as part of its concept that lower-income communities bear more than their share of such airborne pollutants.
The testing mechanisms I use every day (my lungs and throat) inform me these are not harmless emissions!
