Friendly IRS

It seems to be jump-on-the-IRS time. But let me say a good word for those government rascals.

I’m a modest taxpayer. Average income, average gains. For 60 years I’ve done my own taxes, and never had them changed, up or down, until two years ago they gave me an unexpected refund because I’d overlooked something. About $250. They’re friendly.

Only once has my return been challenged. They wanted, politely, more proof of a loss. I gave it, and they accepted.

I’ve never spoken to an accountant. Twice I asked questions at an IRS office and they were helpful.

I was lousy in math in school, so I read the tax instructions carefully and double-checked my math. My tax history had included capital gains and losses on securities; the AT&T; spinoff of the Baby Bells; a small business my wife ran for awhile; renting out a backyard guest house, and even a divorce.

I feel better doing it myself rather than trusting another person. I think anyone can do it alone. Don’t put down unreasonable items without explanation. If you estimate, do it modestly. Keep cool and realize your country needs your share of expense-paying.
