Bernardo G. Lopez; Ex-Cemetery Groundskeeper

Bernardo G. Lopez of Oxnard, retired head groundskeeper for Santa Clara Cemetery, died Sunday at a local hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 84.

Lopez was born in Mexico on Aug. 20, 1913, and lived in Oxnard for 50 years. He retired in 1974 from the Oxnard cemetery, where he oversaw grounds keeping for 25 years.

He enjoyed working in his home gardens and tinkering around the house, family members said, and showed devotion to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lopez was preceded in death by his wife, Maria, and a son, Anthony.

He is survived by daughters Jessie Martinez and Susana Makela, sons Joseph and Manuel Lopez, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Friday at Santa Clara Chapel in Oxnard, with a rosary recitation at 7 p.m. at the chapel.

A funeral Mass will be said at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Santa Clara Church, Oxnard, with interment following at Santa Clara Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Garcia Mortuary, Oxnard.
