Diversity Celebrated With Program on Tolerance

Share

Hoping to show there is zero tolerance for discrimination, the City Council today will have its second annual Celebration of Diversity.

The event, scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m. at City Hall, will feature speakers on racial tolerance, hate crimes and other abuses. A $5 donation will be requested.

The event comes 18 months after the city unveiled a “Declaration of Policy About Human Dignity” that supports the rights of all people and warns that anyone who physically harms or verbally abuses others will face the full extent of the law. The declaration was fueled by two murders of minorities in Huntington Beach at the hands of skinheads and other hate crime activity in past years, Councilwoman Shirley S. Dettloff said.

The keynote speaker will be Michael Gennaco, assistant U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, who has been responsible for coordinating hate crime and other prosecutions.
