A small pipe bomb exploded in the Swiss city of Basel early Sunday near the site of a meeting marking the 100th anniversary of the first Zionist congress, but it caused only slight damage and no injuries, authorities said.

Markus Melzl, spokesman for Basel prosecutors, said no one had taken responsibility for the bomb, which went off shortly after midnight about half a mile from the hall hosting the congress events.

“We have absolutely no indications that this has any link to the Zionist congress,” he said,

No delegates were staying in the hotel across the street from where the bomb went off, he said.

Federal prosecutors had opened an investigation, as in crimes involving explosives, he said.

About 1,700 delegates are attending the event, which is schedules to culminate sunday with a ceremony commemorating the first Zionist World Congress in August 1879.
