Hoyer-Larsen Advances to Semifinal Round
ORANGE — Denmark’s Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen, the 1996 Olympic gold medal winner in badminton, defeated Marleve Mainaky of Indonesia to advance to the semifinals of the U.S. Open Badminton tournament Thursday in Orange.
Hoyer-Larsen, who’s ranked fourth in the world, beat Mainaky, 15-9, 15-6. He’ll play China’s Yigang Luo, who defeated Thomas Stuer-Lauridsen, 15-11, 15-7, in a quarterfinal match.
In other men’s quarterfinal matches, Jeroen van Dijk, who Wednesday defeated defending world champion Peter Rasmussen of Denmark, had little trouble with Herrnawan Susanto of Indonesia, winning, 15-9, 15-5. Also advancing was Denmark’s Peter Gade Christensen, who beat Alan Budi Kusuma of Indonesia, 17-18, 15-2, 17-14.
In women’s singles, Yun Dai of China defeated Cindy Shi of the United States, 12-10, 11-2 in a quarterfinal round.
The semifinal matches start at 5 p.m. today.
