Denmark’s Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen defeated countryman Peter Gade Christensen to win the U.S. Open badminton tournament Saturday at the Orange County Badminton Club in Orange. Hoyer-Larsen won in three games, 15-6, 7-15, 15-6.

It was the third time in five matches that Hoyer-Larsen, second in last year’s Open, was pushed to a third game. Hoyer-Larsen was the 1996 Olympic gold medalist and is ranked fourth in the world.

Camilla Martin, also of Denmark, came from behind to defeat China’s Dai Yun to win the women’s title. After winning the first game, 11-4, Martin lost the second game, 11-6, and trailed in the third. Yun had five match points in the game, but could not put Martin away.
