Concerning Older Drivers

Senior drivers and safety will be the focus of a KCET documentary, “A Driving Need,” set to air on Friday at 9 p.m. The production follows a day in the life of an elderly man driving with his granddaughter. During their trip, viewers learn how to measure their own driving strengths and weaknesses and how to improve their road safety.

The show provides senior drivers, their families and caregivers with basic information on motor skills affected by age, and outlines strategies to keep drivers safe well into their senior years.

By 2000, about 28% of American drivers will be 55 or older. By 2050, that number will rise to 39%.

The half-hour documentary will repeat on KCET at 6 p.m. on Sept. 21.
