From Times staff and wire reports

Two new vaccines against Lyme disease have been shown to be highly effective, researchers told a meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America in San Francisco this week. The vaccines are manufactured by SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals and Pasteur Marieux Connaught. They will probably seek approval from the Food and Drug Administration later this year.

About 98,000 cases of the tick-borne illness have been reported to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since 1982, including about 14,000 last year.
