Extradition of David Alvarez

Share

Re “U.S., Mexico Argue Over Accused Killer,” Sept. 18: Mexico is sending a clear message to the U.S.: Promise us no death penalty for David “Spooky” Alvarez; if you don’t promise us, then we will release this [alleged] killer.

How much more stupid and sick can Mexico get by threatening the citizens of Mexico and the U.S. by releasing an accused multiple killer.

This attitude helps explain why Mexico is so corrupt and hundreds of thousands of Mexicans risk their lives yearly to sneak into America. And Jorge Vargas, what a hypocrite. He stated that the perception is that American law is violent and barbaric. Why is it, Mr. Vargas, that you see thousands of Mexicans running from their country, risking their lives to sneak into the U.S., as if something violent and barbaric was happening in their country? Now you tell me who is barbaric!

* Mexico owes neither Dist. Atty. Gil Garcetti, Atty. Gen. Janet Reno, nor this nation a duty to return Alvarez. It was only half a decade ago that the U.S. went into Mexico and grabbed one of its citizens at gunpoint in violation of treaties and extradition agreements--and our U.S. Supreme Court said that was acceptable (U.S. vs. Alvarez Machain). Turnabout is fair play.
