One Council Squabble Sets Off a Second Quarrel

One political battle turned into another when a decision to oppose a planned new golf course sparked a bitter debate over campaign endorsements.
Councilman Ho Chung, the only council member to support a proposed third, 18-hole golf course in Mile Square Regional Park in neighboring Fountain Valley, was condemned by fellow council members Tuesday for what they said was his politically motivated position.
“I’m ashamed of you tonight,” Mayor Bruce Broadwater said. “I see politics in this tonight, and you should be ashamed. You’re opposing what’s best for the people for the endorsement of the County Board of Supervisors.”
Chung, who is expected to run for a state Assembly seat next year, said the decision by the county to add another golf course to the park is a “done deal,” and the facility will bring much needed revenues into county coffers.
The council, trying to save park space, approved a resolution opposing and protesting the golf course development. Chung abstained.
