CSC Wins Contract to Supply GM Unit
Computer Sciences Corp. won a five-year, $100-million contract to supply information technology services to General Motors Locomotive Group in LaGrange, Ill. The El Segundo-based computer services and consulting firm beat out Electronic Data Systems--which was spun off from General Motors in June--and eight other firms to win the contract, said CSC spokesman Bruce Plowman. CSC will offer jobs to about 120 EDS employees in the Midwest, but the deal will not affect employment in Southern California, Plowman said. Last week, Computer Sciences acquired Information Technology Solutions of Hampton, Va., for an undisclosed amount. Privately held ITS has 1,100 employees and recorded sales of $88 million last year. CSC shares were unchanged at $55 on the New York Stock Exchange.
* Intertainer Inc., a Santa Monica-based start-up that plans to deliver interactive video services to TV sets and PCs, is expected to announce Thursday that Sony and US West Communications have invested in the company. Intel and Comcast have also increased their stakes in Intertainer, bringing total investment in the firm to $15 million, co-founder Jonathan Taplin said. Intertainer recently completed technical trials of its system in Buena Park, using Comcast’s cable lines, and in Palo Alto, using Pacific Bell’s digital subscriber line network, and expects to roll out the service in Philadelphia and Phoenix by June.
