Frances Byfield, principal at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Santa Ana, has been named recipient of the 1998 State Diversity Award by the Assn. of California School Administrators.

Byfield was honored for her outstanding leadership in developing and implementing programs that have celebrated the school’s diverse student body, including studying world leaders and different cultures. Students discussed racism and racial tolerance as part of a recent celebration of the legacy of the school’s namesake.

“I’m extremely proud to be selected for this award,” Byfield said. “It reflects the ongoing vision of diversity and cultural appreciation at our school.”

Byfield will lead a panel discussion to showcase some of the successful diversity programs that have been instituted at King Elementary at the association’s meeting April 24 in Costa Mesa.

“I’d like to thank the King staff and students for helping to make this possible,” Byfield added. “This award really recognizes a team effort.”
